1. What is Domain name? 

Machines will generate a number and for human friendliness we are converting the IP as readable. Could you think what is this number stands for 192.220.13.223? -- This is the server IP for “lgcnsindia.com”, even if you copy paste the IP or lgcnsindia.com, both shows the same output in the browser

In simple word: “User readable internet address is known as Domain name”. 

2. What are the types of domains?

Sub domain, Root domain or domain name and Top level domain these are the 3 types of domains which is equal to the URL 

Sub domain: Sub domain is also called as a third level domain, the common most subdomain choice is “www”. There is another way of creating a subdomain, if I need to create a blog, then my sub domain will be http://blog.google.com, here “Blog” is the subdomain. Subdomains are free to create under any root domain

Root Domain: Root domain is also called as a second level domain; find the root domain name simple and keyword rich. If my business is on “mobile” then selecting a root domain with the word mobile is the best practice.  

• Keyword as 1st word in domain will give lot of effects, still 2nd place will not
• Avoid root domain length more than 15 characters
• Avoid using hyphen (separator) more than one time Eg: www.mobile-world.com

Top Level Domain: Top level domain in short form it called as “TLD”, TLD is categorized as 3 forms GTLD, CCTLD, STLD

A. gTLD stands for "Generic Top level Domain". The most common GTLD are “.com, .net, .org”.

B. sTLD stands for “Sponsored top-level domain” sTLD domains include:

• ‘. travel’ for Travel agents, airlines, hotels, tourist offices, etc. Eg: http://www.indonesia.travel/
• ‘.jobs’ for HR Managers etc. Eg: http://www.goto.jobs
• ‘.edu’ can be used by education sectors. Eg : http://www.columbia.edu/

C. ccTLD stands for “County Code Top Level Domain”. If my business is only in India then “.in, .co.in” are the preferred Top level domains. Eg: http://www.amazon.in/, https://www.irctc.co.in 

3. Purchase Domain Name

Free domain name:

Lot of free websites are there to create your free domain name like blogger.com, wordpress.com, etc.. But it will contain their brand name in the domain name

Eg: http://seojaikumar.blogspot.in/

Paid Domain Name:

Huge numbers of service providers are there in the market to create your own domain name, depend upon selecting the TDL the cost will differ

Compare your selected domain name cost with different type of service providers from http://tld-list.com/
